National Relief Charities
Established more than 20 years ago, National Relief Charities provides millions of dollars worth of services for Native Americans through over 1,000 different tribal programs across the United States. The nonprofit operates from program offices and distribution centers in the Plains and Southwest to reach roughly 300,000 Native Americans in remote locations, through its targeted programs such as the Southwest Indian Relief Council, the Navajo Relief Fund, and the Sioux Nation Relief Fund.
Using outreach and referrals, National Relief Charities identifies reservations and tribal programs in need of support. Working together, they determine which NRC programs and services would make a difference for the tribal program and people being served. To maintain accountability, National Relief Charities establishes written guidelines for each community project or service; they ensure high-quality resources are given and effective partner reports are received.
All of the provided supplies are managed through utilizing a sophisticated warehousing and distribution system. Because of this and other efficiencies, National Relief Charities can commit more than 70 percent of its donations directly to programs and services. Some programs of National Relief Charities focus on specific aspects of Native American aid, such as the American Indian Education Foundation, which presents scholarships, retention grants and services, and school supplies. Others, such as the American Indian Relief Council, concentrate on a definite region and provide a broad range of services such as fuel in the winter to breakfast food for Elders. In total, National Relief Charities offers 26 different services, all of which are made possible by the donations of more than 500,000 donors. The $40 million in cash and in-kind donations that National Relief Charities receives annually comes without government support and translates directly into more than 5 million pounds of goods for reservations each year.
