In the September 2011 edition of Ebony magazine, Washington lobbyist Engel Burns discusses the road leading to his successful career in health care, marketing and politics. In the article in Ebony, Engel Burns reveals that one must possess personality as well as persuasive abilities in order to achieve success as a lobbyist.

Engel Burns graduated from the University of Maryland in Baltimore County with a degree in Biology. Early in his career, Engel Burns took on a variety of jobs, ranging from clinical laboratory assistant to teacher to entrepreneur. Beginning his political career in 1994, Engel Burns served as Campaign Director for Citizens for Burns, an organization that sought to elect Dr. Emmett C. Burns Jr. to the Maryland General Assembly. The campaign was a success and Dr. Emmett C. Burns Jr. became the first African American to be elected to statewide office in Baltimore County. As the campaign director, Engel Burns was in charge of activities including event planning, fund raising, marketing, and public relations. During this time, Engel Burns also served as a legislative aide on behalf of his community and also as a liaison to faith-based organizations.

With more than 15 years of experience working in the health care and marketing fields and almost two decades in politics, Engel Burns is the Federal Account Director of Government Affairs at Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. As director of the company Engel Burns promotes legislative initiatives to advance the company's work treating central nervous system disorders and respiratory diseases. Engel D. Burns is also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.’s Council of Corporate Advisors.
