Scott Besander
A former radio transmitter operator with the U.S. military, Scott Besander completed 8 years of service and received his honorable discharge in 2008. Based in White Sands, New Mexico, Scott Besander additionally served at Fort Benning and Fort Gordon Garrison in Georgia and at the 202nd Air Defense Artillery Base in Chicago, Illinois. Scott Besander wanted to pursue a degree in special education after his experience with special needs students in high school. Building on his interests, he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, completing a Bachelor of Science in Special Education. As part of the school’s education program, he was employed as a Room Supervisor with Brehm Preparatory School, learning valuable hands-on skills while assisting the special needs community. He taught children necessary life skills like cooking, cleaning, and effective time management. In this position, Scott Besander’s responsibilities included daily tutoring and transportation of the students to and from activities. Quickly securing a professional position upon the fulfillment of his military obligations, Scott Besander undertook a job as student teacher, aiding both General John A. Logan School and Murphysboro Middle School. Assuming multiple responsibilities, Scott Besander was involved in implementing a 6-week spelling enhancement program that increased student test scores an average of 53 percent. Scott Besander’s cumulative experience with creating behavioral intervention plans continues to assist both parents and teachers in their goals for offering a successful educational environment for students with special needs. Currently a valuable aide in the education of special needs students in Naperville, Illinois, Scott Besander assists them with motivation for studying math and reading, improving existing study habits, and daily organization.
