Robert Creamer

Currently a Partner with Democracy Partners, Robert Creamer has a background in political and strategic organization that extends more than four decades. In 1975, with several years of campus and community activism behind him, Robert Creamer helped found Citizen Action of Illinois, originally known as Illinois Public Action. He spearheaded rapid growth of the organization, focusing on senior citizen, social justice, environmental, health care, and tax issues.

Throughout the 1980s, Mr. Creamer oriented the 250,000-member-strong organization toward broad coalition initiatives, notably leading efforts against Robert Bork’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court through the Anti-Bork Coalition. As Spokesperson for Citizen Action of Illinois, he also helped organize the Illinois Coalition Against Reagan Economics, which achieved the removal of medicine and food sales taxes. He also led numerous political action campaigns in support of progressive Democrat candidates in Illinois and throughout the nation.

As a political consultant, Robert Creamer has been involved in organizing a number of nationwide coalition campaigns. In 2005, he managed Americans United to Protect Social Security’s national field program, driving efforts to defeat President George W. Bush’s proposed privatization of social security. Three years later, he coordinated local rapid response on behalf of the Democratic National Committee against Republican Presidential candidate John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin. Mr. Creamer currently serves as General Consultant with Americans United for Change, which has led campaigns to pass President Barack Obama’s landmark jobs and economic stimulus package as well as his budget.

A noted author, Mr. Creamer has authored more than 200 political articles for the Huffington Post, and his book Stand Up Straight: How Progressives Can Win has been cited by Arianna Huffington as a “master’s class in electoral politics.” Splitting time between Evanston, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., Robert Creamer is married to Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL9).
