George Subraj

A philanthropist and self-made businessman, George Subraj began his professional career as a Guyanese farmer. After relocating to the New York City area in the 1970s, he worked as an electronics salesman before launching a career in real estate. George Subraj serves as the President of Zara Realty Holding Corp., which he founded in 1981. Beginning with a single multifamily residential building in Jamaica, Queens, George Subraj and his team at Zara Realty Holding Corp. have expanded their business to include over 20 properties throughout the region. They also maintain a building in Orlando, Florida, a gated community called Hibiscus Place. When he first came to the United States, George Subraj enrolled in New York’s Midtown School of Business, working as a supermarket packer concurrently. Upon graduation, he entered the electronics industry, accepting a position as a salesman for Frostee’s Friendly Store based in Queens, New York. By the beginning of the 1980s, George Subraj was ready to enter the residential rental industry. Since establishing his business 30 years ago, George Subraj has consistently focused on cleanliness, quality, safety, and value. As a testament to his success, several of his tenants have remained with him since he began in1981. Numerous testimonials are also available on the Zara Realty Holding website. Outside of his professional work, George Subraj has distinguished himself as a philanthropist. He has played an active role in sponsoring the Guyana Watch Inc. medical outreach team, a nonprofit group that organizes visits by American medical professionals to underserved communities in Guyana. George Subraj has also paved the way for a number of medical firsts in Guyana, including the country’s first kidney transplant and pediatric heart surgeries. Within the local community, George Subraj has made several donations to the religious organization Prem Bhakti Mandir. In 2009, George Subraj donated an elevator to the mandir, allowing the elderly and disabled to attend worship services. George Subraj has also supported a number of educational initiatives.
