Bret Raper
Before attending Indiana University as an undergraduate, Bret Raper spent over three years as a sideman with country music icon Tom T. Hall, working primarily in Nashville, Tennessee. Later in life, Bret continued to demonstrate his talent for making music, participating in Indiana’s own Lloyd Wood Show. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University in August of 1992 (having graduated summa cum laude from the Bloomington, Indiana campus) Bret Raper immediately went on to study law at Indiana University School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor in May 1995. Bret Raper began work in the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office in January of 1997 as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. For over seven years, Raper worked in the juvenile department of the Prosecutor’s Office. During this time, Bret Raper was a vocal supporter and active officer in Monroe County’s celebrated Victim Offender Reconciliation Program. Raper was an enthusiastic celebrant of the three-tiered program, which first promises to grant an offender the opportunity to acknowledge having done wrong, promoting empathy towards the victim. The second aspect of the program is its creation of the opportunity for an offender to demonstrate their ability to take responsibility for their actions, doing what they can to repair the damage caused. Third, the offender makes a personal pledge to the victim that they will not repeat their actions. Since June 2004, Bret Raper has held the position of Commissioner of Monroe County Circuit Court. For his work in child advocacy, Bret Raper is the recipient of the Indiana State Bar’s Civil Rights for Children Award, and is also a member of the Indiana State Bar Association.
