Nermin Dizdar
Nermin Dizdar immigrated to the Seattle, Washington, area in 1994, escaping the Bosnian civil war. With the assistance of a sponsor from the International Rescue Committee, Mr. Dizdar, along with his future spouse, connected with the local Bosnian community. The community, in turn, helped Nermin Dizdar find employment at the Seattle International Airport, where he was a member of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and worked for five years.
Soon married and accustomed to life in the United States, Nermin Dizdar ventured into self-employment. In 1999, he joined with a small number of other Bosnian émigrés to form a telecommunications company servicing Bosnian and Croatian communities by helping them stay in touch with their families back home. Building on the success of this initial venture, Nermin Dizdar started his own wholesale telecommunications company, CrossConnection, Inc., in late 2003, as Bosnia-Herzegovina ended the monopoly of the Bosnian telecommunications industry. Taking advantage of the new playing field, CrossConnection was one of the first companies to gain authorization to provide telecommunication service inside Bosnia. In 2009, due to changes in the Bosnian economy and the devaluation of the U.S. dollar, Mr. Dizdar closed CrossConnection.
Nermin Dizdar is now investing in his education, attending Bellevue College and studying Computer Maintenance and Systems Administration.
Nermin Dizdar was enrolled in high school in his hometown of Banja Luka when the war broke out. While still in school, he assisted the International Red Cross in distributing food during the civil war. During this time, Nermin Dizdar also played professional soccer for FK Željezničar until the war caused the league to suspend activities.
Now based in Seattle, Nermin Dizdar continues to reach out to his community. He supports the local King County Police Union, donates to soccer club Inter Seattle, and coaches a youth basketball team. Remaining active, Mr. Dizdar enjoys hiking in Mount Rainer National Park as well as swimming. He is certified in the MOAB defense technique style of martial arts.
