Merlyn Kettering
Currently a resident of Maryland, Merlyn Kettering, PhD, has dedicated his career to international development. Over the last 30 years, he has collaborated with such organizations as the United States Department of Agriculture, the Peace Corps, and Oxfam. He has also published several books and reports in conjunction with the World Bank Group, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In addition to this aspect of his career, Merlyn Kettering has devoted more than 15 years to his work in East Africa, specifically on projects and programs in Kenya and southern Sudan.
Merlyn Kettering is a life-long member of the Church of the Brethren. He was appointed by the Church of the Brethren to work with the New Sudan Council of Churches (NSCC) with a focus on its mission and peacemaking. In this role, he helped formulate and carry out NSCC's People to People Peacemaking Program, a grassroots initiative for peace in southern Sudan. When the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed, he helped start and organize the peace and reconciliation organization, RECONCILE, which is continuing with peace and civil education training and advocacy in South Sudan. Dr. Kettering aided this southern Sudan-based group with its preliminary organizational formation, community organization, methodology development, and leadership training.
Merlyn Kettering also holds membership in the Silver Spring Club of Toastmasters International. Toastmasters is an organization dedicated to improving members' leadership and public speaking skills. He has served in leadership roles for the club, including Vice President of Education and club President. He also served as Area 62 Governor (2010-2011) and has given leadership and speaking training for numerous clubs in the area and district. In addition, he is a coach and mentor for individual members seeking to improve their speaking skills.
