Karl Uberla
Karl Überla is a renowned biometrician whose research and acumen helped shape today's medical informatics, biometry, and epidemiology. Between 1954 and 1963, Karl Überla double majored in medicine and psychology at the University of Freiburg. He then spent a year abroad as a Visiting Research Assistant in the Laboratory of Personality Assessment and Group Behavior at the University of Illinois. He returned to Germany in 1964 and immediately started working as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Medical Statistics at the University of Mainz. Mr. Überla’s dedication to the field of medical statistics, documentation, and data processing earned him a Chair position at the University of Ulm. In 1972, Karl Überla became Dean of the Medical Faculty and the Vice Rector of the University of Ulm, an appointment he held until 1973.
From 1974 to 2004, he attended to clinical trials that required his biometrics expertise. While Karl Überla remained a committed biometrician, he also served as chair on a number of committees and in various industry-related departments. From 1974 to 1995, Karl Überla served as Chairman of the Data Processing Center of the Medical Faculty. In 1981, he became the President of the Federal Health Office in Berlin (the German equivalent of the Food and Drug Administration in the United States). In this role, Mr. Überla helped determined which drugs were safe for sale on the German market, as well as overseeing the overall management of the organization. As part of his duties, he also chaired a number of public hearings. As President of the Health Office, Karl Überla was instrumental in developing the distribution of anti-HIV/AIDS medications available to the public.
Over the years, Karl Überla actively contributed to professional journals dealing with biometrics, medical informatics, and epidemiology, earning publication for about 500 of his articles. He was also a member of various research organizations, including the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the Society for Clinical Trials, The International Biometric Society, and the International Epidemiologic Association. Additionally, Mr. Überla makes an annual donation to charities that support students in Uganda.
Now retired, Karl Überla enjoys mountain climbing, skiing, and playing golf.
