Akram Ismail
Dr. Akram Ismail specializes in gastroenterology, the branch of medicine that focuses on the study of the digestive system and related-disorders. He has performed a number of procedures and handled several highly publicized cases, such as a trans-oral surgery he performed to correct a patient’s gastroephageal reflux disease. The patient traveled from Kuwait to Florida in order to receive treatment for her ailment. Dr. Ismail was also one of the first in the Tri-County area to use capsules to measure stomach acidity and examine the small intestine. The procedure allowed Dr. Ismail and his fellow physicians the opportunity to see the entire small intestine for the first time. After earning his degrees, Dr. Akram Ismail completed a one-year rotating internship at Ain Shams University Hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Remaining in Cairo, he undertook a residency in internal medicine at El-Mataria Teaching Hospital and another at A. Zaher Teaching Hospital in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, where he also served as a Clinical Instructor. Moving to Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Akram Ismail fulfilled an externship in emergency medicine at Coney Island Hospital. In Newark, New Jersey, Dr. Ismail completed a combined internship and residency, then a fellowship in digestive diseases at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Akram Ismail subsequently moved to Florida, where he opened his private practice, Professional Gastroenterology & Surgery Associates, managing 11 specialties. He also served as Medical Director at both Lake Surgery & Endoscopy Center and EndoSurg Outpatient Center. He had hospital privileges at Leesburg Regional Medical Center, South Lake Hospital, The Village Regional Hospital, and Florida Hospital Waterman. Actively involved in his career, Dr. Ismail held memberships in the American Gastroenterology Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and the Florida Medical Center.
