Dr. Miodrag Velickovic focuses his medical practice on disorders of the nervous system. Currently, he serves as the Attending Physician at Northwestern Westchester Hospital and Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. Among a number of other areas of expertise, Dr. Miodrag Velickovic is recognized for his specialized knowledge of Parkinson’s disease. A progressive movement disorder caused by the loss of brain nerve cells, Parkinson’s disease causes movement difficulties in the many patients affected by the condition. Thought to be caused substantially by genetic factors, Dr. Miodrag Velickovic has conducted and published research about this disorder in a variety of journals. He was featured in leading medical and neurological journals, such as BMC Medical Genetics, Neurology, Human Genetics, and Movement Disorders. Some representative samples of his writing on the genetic causes of Parkinson’s disease include “Genomewide association study for onset age in Parkinson disease” and “Maternal inheritance and mitochondrial DNA variants in familial Parkinson’s disease,” both in BMC Medical Genetics, and “Mutations in GBA are associated with familial Parkinson disease susceptibility and age at onset” in Neurology. Dr. Miodrag Velickovic co-authored a chapter in a book on Parkinson’s disease entitled Communication and Swallowing Disorders in Parkinson Disease and wrote “Clinical correlates of depressive symptoms in familial Parkinson’s Disease,” published in Movement Disorders. Dr. Miodrag Velickovic also promotes the exchange of information through presentations. He has also been invited to deliver a series of Grand Rounds lectures for hospital professionals. Dr. Miodrag Velickovic delivered a lecture on updates in Parkinson’s disease at the Metropolitan Hospital Center and at the Bronx Division of The Jewish Home Lifecare and a lecture on advances in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York. Dr. Miodrag Velickovic maintains an active membership in the Parkinson Study Group, a North American study group founded in 1986 to promote research into the causes, progression, and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Since its founding, the Parkinson Study Group has conducted over 35 multi-center trials that examine the effects of experimental interventions for Parkinson’s disease.
