Roman Hitchev

Responsible for the standardization and regulation of tissue banks across Europe, Roman Hitchev is the President-Elect of the European Association of Tissue Banks. He also acts as Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Tissue Banks, ensuring the Association’s compliance with the policies of European Association of Tissue Banks and its continued compliance with international medical and safety standards. In both of these important positions, his strong leadership and experience contribute to the success of the World Union of Tissue and Cell Banking Associations.

Roman Hitchev combines his responsibilities in Europe with his position as Vice President International of New Jersey-based Osteotech. Working as an executive for the surgical tissue supplier for nearly 10 years, Roman Hitchev employs considerable effort in the procurement of tissue from around the globe, with much of his work benefiting not only Bulgaria’s people, but also its economy. Osteotech’s work in Bulgaria has led to the development of more than 200 jobs, and its collaboration with the Scoliosis Research Society continues to aid local children by facilitating treatment from American orthopedic surgeons.

Prior to joining Osteotech, Roman Hitchev functioned as Executive Director for Lions Eye and Tissue Bank and Research Foundation, Inc. in Washington, D.C. He also served the Washington Regional Transplant Consortium as a Transplant Procurement Coordinator in Vienna, Virginia.

Roman Hitchev completed his Master of Public Health degree at the National Academy of Health Sciences in Sofia, and his M.D. from the Medical University of Varna, both in Bulgaria. He received additional education from the United States Military, including a Graduate Diploma from the U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences and a Distinguished Graduate Diploma from the U.S. Defense Language Institute.

Roman Hitchev also completed his M.B.A. in Medical Services Management at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and he continues to reside in the Maryland town of Montgomery Village.
