Mervin Smucker
: Mervin Smucker developed his expertise as an international psychological consultant through an array of international education and career opportunities. As an undergraduate, he earned a Bachelor’s degree at Antioch College in Ohio and also studied in Besançon, France, Tübingen, Germany, and Brussels, Belgium. Currently a full-time consultant and trainer, Dr. Mervin Smucker makes keynote speeches and conducts workshops and seminars internationally. His workshops include “Integrating Imagery Rescripting with Art Therapy in the Treatment of Traumatic Memories,” presented at the 39th EABCT Annual Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and “Imagery Rescripting and Reprocessing Therapy,” a two-day workshop held in Perth, Australia. The originator of Imagery Rescripting and Reprocessing Therapy, Dr. Mervin Smucker began his clinical research with imagery treatments at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. A Fellow at the Center, he also served as a clinician, researcher, and Director of Education and Clinical Training. At Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Mervin Smucker maintained a practice in clinical psychology for 15 years. He specialized in panic and anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, posttraumatic stress, traumatic grief, depression, and borderline and narcissistic disorders, conducting individual, couples, and family therapy. Dr. Mervin Smucker also held positions as Clinical Director of the Trauma Treatment Program in the Department of Behavioral Medicine at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee and as director, trainer, and consultant at the Cognitive Therapy Institute of Milwaukee. As an Associate Clinical Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he taught courses and oversaw cognitive therapy to psychiatric residents and psychology interns. Dr. Mervin Smucker also conducted research on the effects and treatment of trauma victims with PTSD. Currently a full-time consultant, Dr. Mervin Smucker has written or co-authored several books in English and German. Such works include Imagery Rescripting: A Treatment Manual for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse Experiencing PTSD, as well as Imagery Rescripting & Reprocessing Therapy: Behandlungsmanual für Typ I Trauma. Also a contributor to numerous articles published in professional journals, Dr. Mervin Smucker has co-authored many scholarly articles including “Imagery Applications in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” in the Encyclopedia of Cognitive Behavior Therapy and “Is Type-D a Stable Construct? An Examination of Type-D Personality in Patients Before and After Cardiac Surgery” in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research.
