Mark Chae

Psychologist and author Mark Chae has written multiple articles regarding the increasing inclusion of minorities in North American society. In his article “Gender and Ethnicity in Identity Formation,” featured in The New Jersey Journal of Professional Counseling, Mark Chae discusses how ethnic minorities shape themselves in connection with their gender and individual cultures mixing with the mainstream American culture. Mark Chae explains why he believes the combination of gender and race ultimately influence identity formation.

As a coauthor for “Splitting and Projective Identification in Multicultural Group Counseling,” Mark Chae and his colleagues describe the function of splitting and projective identification in the development and preservation of racial and cultural prejudice. The authors also demonstrate how performing these actions in a group setting can reduce prejudice and support a communal structure. In the compilation Culturally Responsive Counseling with Asian American Men, Dr. Chae once again collaborated with experts in his field to discuss racial relations in America. Focusing on the distinct issues Asian American men experience, he offers research to clinicians so they can provide successful counseling strategies and techniques formulated specifically for this ethnic group. Individual chapters focus on issues such as racism, sexual orientation, identity development, and intergenerational conflict.

Using his knowledge and writing talent for editorial purposes as well, Mark Chae offers his services to the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Counseling and Values, Journal of Counseling and Development, and the Journal of Applied Rehabilitation Counseling. In addition to his writing engagements, Dr. Chae is currently a Researcher at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. In the past, Dr. Chae has been a faculty member for William Paterson University and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
