Kevin Gersh
Kevin Gersh launched Gersh Academy in 1999 after perceiving a glaring need for a private school devoted to children and teens with autism spectrum and other neurobiological disorders. Having struggled with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia himself, Kevin Gersh understood the critical importance of imparting adequate educational, life, and vocational skills to those who need them. The Gersh Academy flagship programs, I Am I Can and BASE (Behavioral, Academic & Social Enrichment) Institute, enable students to develop sufficient emotional stability to recognize their own symptoms and better manage their disorders. Kevin Gersh hires, trains, and supervises all staff. Teachers in the I Am I Can program receive training on a spectrum of neurobiological disorders as well as collaborative problem solving methods, and weekly training sessions keep classroom instructors abreast of the student population mix as well as developments in the field. The BASE Institute, a full-day school program, employs an applied behavioral analysis methodology to help children with autism spectrum disorders from ages 5 to 21. To support each child's education, Gersh Academy gathers a team that works together and includes parents or guardians, site directors, teachers, assistant teachers or aides, school psychologists, and if needed, specialists in speech therapy or occupational therapy, a social worker, and a consulting psychiatrist. Significantly, Kevin Gersh insists that successful programs must include parental involvement. Kevin Gersh makes it a priority to involve parents in their children’s education; parents also receive cognitive-behavioral training to ensure the student’s treatment at home falls in synch with lessons learned at school. Kevin Gersh encourages parents to make themselves available during the school day and to attend on-site support groups and training sessions to learn as much as they can about how to work with their child’s learning challenges and how to effect compatible care and training at home. In effect, Gersh Academy enrolls the entire family, not just the student.
