Judge J. Michael Flournoy

Now semi-retired, former Coconino County Superior Court Judge, division 1, J. Michael Flournoy has nearly 50 years of experience in the legal field, including 10 years with three elections as a Judge. Before his election as Coconino County Superior Court Judge, he served as a Public Defender, elected two terms (8 years) as the County Attorney, and as an Attorney in private practice for 30 years. Throughout his career, J. Michael Flournoy has also acted as a part time instructor at Northern Arizona University, where he spent his first year as an undergraduate student. J. Michael Flournoy transferred from Northern Arizona University to the University of Arizona after one year. At the University of Arizona, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1959 before enrolling in the University of Arizona College of Law. After receiving his Doctor of Laws in 1962, he was admitted to the State Bar of Arizona and began work as a partner at Preston, Flournoy & Flick, the local law firm where he practiced for nearly 15 years. In 1974, Flournoy was named Outstanding County Attorney of the Year in the state of Arizona. After years of working in private practice and as a public defender and county attorney, J. Michael Flournoy was elected to the position of Judge in the Superior Court. In that position, he was responsible for one-quarter of the criminal, civil, and domestic relations actions in the county until another County Judge was added, making Flournoy responsible for one-fifth of court duties. He was also the Coconino County Probate Judge for 10 years. Currently, Flournoy works part time as a lawyer in private practice, participating in only a few civil and criminal cases and focusing on mediation and arbitration. In his free time, he enjoys following local sports, including University of Arizona Wildcat athletics, Northern Arizona University Lumberjack athletics, the Phoenix Suns as a 44-year season ticket holder, the Arizona Cardinals and the Arizona Diamondbacks. J. Michael Flournoy has a daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren and he is a dedicated Catholic (Christian), supporting the church through church attendance, bible study, and donations. He enjoys Lake Powell and has owned a boat on the lake for nearly 35 years. He currently divides his time between Flagstaff and Paradise Valley, Arizona. He is an avid golfer and loves to travel to Hawaii and Mexico particularly.
