Those unfamiliar with hair transplantation may be apprehensive about the procedure. However, the actual surgery requires only local anesthesia and can take place in the office, according to Dr. Gallagher.
In the first step in hair transplantation, doctors remove a layer of skin that contains an abundant amount of hair and demonstrates a resistance to hair loss. For patients concerned about scarring, Dr. Joseph Gallagher notes that the donor area undergoes a closing procedure that does not leave scars. Using a special microscope, doctors then separate the donor graft into one-, two-, and three-hair follicular units.

Dr. Gallagher utilizes a technique known as dense packing, which calls for closely placed, random, undulating needle incisions to attach the grafts permanently.
