Sorell L. Schwartz-Gurkiran
Active in pharmacology and toxicology for more than 40 years, Sorell Schwartz devotes time and energy to numerous areas of his field. As a pharmacology professor at Georgetown University Medical Center, Sorell Schwartz has focused his theoretical and laboratory research on a greater understanding of concepts such as pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, toxicological causation, and the interface of science and law in contemporary situations. Equally committed to fostering best practices in his field, Professor Schwartz spends a large part of his career exploring and teaching ethical issues in scientific research. He has a particular interest in the eugenics advocacy in the United States from the turn of the 20th century to World War II, and in the as well as the German medical- eugenics seeds that led to the World War II death camp experiments. After graduating with a BSP from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, and a PhD in pharmacology from the Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine), Sorell Schwartz spent several years as a Naval officer at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Institute, National Naval Medical Center, in Bethesda, Maryland, where he participated in the Experimental Medicine Division and headed the Pharmacology Division. Joining the faculty of Georgetown University School of Medicine, thereafter, he served as Professor of Pharmacology and Director of the Toxicology and Applied Pharmacokinetics Program. Now Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology at Georgetown University Medical Center, Sorell L. Schwartz directs a Master’s program concerning biomedical product development and management, and is engaged in new modeling methods for pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Professor Schwartz also chairs the Institutional Review Board on Adverse Events, which examines the adverse reactions to drug treatment in clinical trials, covering four Georgetown University IRB’s.
