Sophie Ranen
Sophie Ranen, a top scholar-athlete in her junior year at The Bryn Mawr School, has a long record of volunteer and charitable activities. She has assisted at The Baltimore Station, a residential treatment facility for men, most of them veterans, dealing with substance abuse, homelessness, and poverty. Another beneficiary of Sophie Ranen’s voluntary work, Moveable Feast, provides free nutritious meals to people with HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, and other life-threatening conditions. Manna House, a nonprofit that grew out of the Midtown Churches Community Association, supplies a variety of services to people in need living in Baltimore, Maryland, from counseling and health care outreach to holiday meals, and Sophie Ranen has volunteered her time there, as well as at the local Ronald McDonald House. As part of the leadership team for The Bryn Mawr School’s annual Un-Thanksgiving Food Drive, Ms. Ranen has gathered food supplies for the Maryland Food Bank.
Sophie Ranen has also given of her time to the Pikesville Adult Day Center as well as to Kernan Hospital, an orthopedic and rehabilitation center associated with the University of Maryland Medical System. At Kernan Hospital, she assisted a physical therapist in an intensive care program; she also comforted patients of all ages going through difficult recoveries. At the other end of the age spectrum, Sophie Ranen served on a community service leadership committee made up of students, teachers, and administration. One of the committee's projects was to institute a girls' empowerment program for Govans Elementary School. She has also served the local nonprofit known as Civic Works, which identifies work and skills training for Baltimore youth. During Ms. Ranen's time with Civic Works, whom she served through The Jewish Federation's Helping Hands program, her team designed and converted one of Baltimore's vacant city lots into a community park for local families.
A significant portion of Sophie Ranen’s extracurricular activities relate to her Jewish heritage. During the 2010-2011 academic year, she participated in STAC, or Students Taking Action for Change, a program in which gaining membership is highly competitive. In this prestigious program of service and advocacy for the Jewish community, Ms. Ranen learned about political processes, initiatives for social justice, and community activism. She has performed fundraising for her chapter of B’nai B’rith Youth Organization. The Stephen Kaufman AIDS Outreach Project, associated with the Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, has also benefited from Sophie Ranen’s volunteer efforts. Currently, she serves as Co-Chair for the inaugural edition of the Associated Jewish Charities Teen Leadership Summit.
