Howard Koff
New York attorney Howard M. Koff has more than 40 years of experience in tax law and 30 years of experience in the Albany area, focusing his practice on resolving tax issues for nonfilers. While the federal and state governments treat unfiled taxes as a serious offense, Mr. Koff can help his clients effectively rectify matters with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and the Internal Revenue Service with a variety of services.
Through Koff Tax Advocates, attorney Howard Koff enables nonfilers to bring their taxes up to date. If the IRS has not yet initiated a prosecution, his firm can help clients make a good faith effort to pay overdue taxes and penalties. This approach allows his clients to avoid further fines and jail time. Mr. Koff’s services also include arranging offers in compromise from the IRS. The IRS sometimes grants an offer in compromise to taxpayers with delinquent accounts who lack the ability to pay their taxes in full. While difficult to obtain, Howard Koff applies his considerable experience to secure these waivers on behalf of clients. He can also help clients arrange installment plans or partial payment plans for paying back their taxes, or file for Currently Not Collectible status with the IRS.
As an undergraduate, Howard Koff attended New York University and obtained his Bachelor’s degree with highest honors. He subsequently obtained his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, where he also served as Editor-in-Chief of Law Review. Mr. Koff went on to study at the Georgetown Law Center in Washington, D.C., earning an LL.M. in Taxation. He worked as an appellate attorney for the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice, several corporations, and was a partner at another tax law office before starting his own firm.
Howard M. Koff is a charter member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Real Estate Taxation and has chaired a subcommittee for the American Bar Association.
