Gary Salmirs
About Gary Salmirs:
Shortly after Gary Salmirs established the Ironwill Foundation in 2008, the organization held its first fundraiser, a spin-a-thon event in Tenafly, New Jersey, that June. The event raised an impressive $72,000, which was used to help fund research for a cure for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a condition that causes muscles to atrophy and waste away. Gary Salmirs founded the Ironwill Foundation to raise funds for research and education about diseases that receive little attention in the public.
In addition, Gary Salmirs has shared his own personal commitment to healthy living through the Ironwill Foundation’s Wellness Program. Launched in 2010 in the South Bronx, Gary Salmirs’ program features a six-week course for low-income families that focuses on economical, healthy eating and explains the science behind food so participants can learn how to make good choices in their daily lives.
The course includes quick, nutritious recipe ideas for working parents and provides both English and Spanish manuals for participants to take home. When he is not working with the Ironwill Foundation, Gary Salmirs competes in marathons and triathlons. Most recently, Gary Salmirs finished the ING Marathon in New York City. Possessing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the State University of New York at Oswego, Gary Salmirs lives with his wife Maureen and three children in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
