A dedicated social work professional, Dr. Roque Gerald has strived to improve prevention, intervention, advocacy, and public education as it relates to the protection of children. He possesses significant experience in child welfare, including time spent as a clinical practitioner. In his most recent position as the Director of the Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA), Roque Gerald was responsible for over 4,000 children in the greater Washington, D.C., area. Overseeing a staff of more than 800 employees and a budget of $300 million, he oversees one of the country’s most complext child welfare organizations. As the CFSA’s Director, he has reduced the backlog of requests for investigation by 1,700 following the Banita Jacks crisis, expanded the social worker staff by 40 new employees, and implemented a number of initiatives designed to place children in permanent homes. Prior to joining CFSA, Roque Gerald held numerous positions, including psychologist, clinical director, consultant, and private practitioner. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from The City College of New York, Roque Gerald began as a Counselor-Teacher at For the Love of Children Wilderness Boys School (now known as the FLOC Outdoor Education Center) in Strasburg, Virginia, where he supervised a group of children and teenagers with mental disabilities. In his next role, Roque Gerald turned to social work, serving as a Protective Service Investigator for York-Poquoson Social Services. In this role, he responded to reports of domestic disputes and maltreatment while providing preventative treatment and custody mediation for a number of cases. Moving to Ohio in 1984, he acted as a Clinical Psychology Intern at the East Center for Community Mental Health Inc., where he focused on providing outpatient treatment for families in crisis, adolescents with behavioral disorders, children referred to the facility by the courts, and youths who had been sexually abused. Continuing to pursue his education, Roque Gerald enrolled at The Virginia Consortium Program for Clinical Psychology to earn his Doctorate. Dedicating his career to helping individuals in need, he worked as a Clinical Psychologist for Center Psychiatrists and the ACCESS Program in Virginia. He soon transitioned into administration and founded the Innovative Practice Group, a consulting firm that specialized in helping child welfare agencies develop successful therapeutic programs. By advising various social services organizations, Roque Gerald caught the attention of the CFSA, and he was hired by the organization in 2001.
