Joseph Cotchett
After 40 years as one of the nation’s top trial lawyers, Joseph Cotchett has seen it all. Thankfully, the famous California lawyer has no intention of slowing down, and Cotchett is currently taking the Bush administration head-on as he works with CIA agent Valerie Plame’s legal team. Joseph Cotchett flexes his muscle in the field of law with a prolific history, gaining national recognition as the lead trial lawyer for over 20,000 plaintiffs during the Lincoln Savings & Loan Association case in 1990. In the 1980s, Cotchett made a name for himself after winning incredibly large settlements while defending people wronged through white-collar fraud cases, which culminated during his successful $200 million dollar takedown of Technical Equities Corp. One of Cotchett’s case was Consumers Union versus Sharper Image. Cotchett successfully defended the Consumers Union from a product defamation suit that Sharper Image attempted to stifle the union with. The win was a major step for free press and earned Cotchett praise from Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, which awarded him with the Trial Lawyer of the Year Finalist honor in 2000 for his work on the case. Cotchett has written a multitude of important legal texts, including: The Ethics Gap, Federal Courtroom Evidence, California Courtroom Evidence Foundations, and LexisNexis; Persuasive Opening Statements and Closing Arguments. Cotchett is a member of many prominent legal organizations and is one of three democrats selected of the six who are on the Federal Judicial Advisory Committee, which sends California’s federal judicial nominations directly to President Bush. Cotchett is also a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, International Society of Barristers, American Board of Trial Advocates, and International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Cotchett’s dedication to the field of law extends to his education of others, and Cotchett regularly travels around the country to lecture for some of the world’s top law programs. Cotchett has lectured at Stanford, University of Southern California, Harvard Law School and many more. Cotchett is a revered lawyer in his home state, where he has topped the lists of the ten best trial lawyers in California and has been featured in every edition of the Best Lawyers in America since the publication was created in 1989.
