John Cahill

Attorney John Cahill of New York has been quoted in noted publications, including the New York Times, Forbes, and ARTnews. He has shared his insights as to art historians’ avoiding participation in expert witness testimony in cases involving title and authenticity of fine art. John Cahill explained in the article that although the law generally sides with those who offer opinions in good faith, there may be unintended litigation that results for those who testify. Well-versed in the world of art, John Cahill acts as Partner at the firm, Lynn & Cahill LLP in New York, where he represents art collectors, dealers, nonprofits, estates, advisors, appraisers, galleries, lenders, and auction houses in cases arising from many facets of selling, insuring, or buying fine art. He has authored articles on the subject, delivered lectures, and taken part in discussion panels, such as the one sponsored by the Appraisers Association of America and the College Art Association, in which he spoke about overcoming challenges associated with authenticating art. In addition to his work in the practice’s art law division, John Cahill serves the firm in its business litigation and employment law areas as well. He tries employment claims in court and advises clients on a wide range of employment matters, including compensation, employment and separation agreements, and federal and state employment discrimination. As a litigator, John Cahill endeavors to win cases for his clients, and he possesses an impressive history of prevailing in arbitration venues as well as state and federal district and appellate courts. Prior to co-founding Lynn & Cahill LLP, John Cahill served the fine art auction house Phillips de Pury & Company as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. He also served as a Partner at Berger & Webb, LLP, and Counsel at Friedman Kaplan Seiler & Adelman LLP. Previously, while attending the University of Michigan Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor, John Cahill served as a Summer Associate at Torys LLP. John Cahill holds licensure to practice in the 2nd and 10th Circuit, as well as the State of New York, the Southern District of New York, and the Eastern District of New York Courts. He acts as Chair of the New York City Bar Association’s Art Law Committee, and he sits on the Advisory Council of the Appraisers Association of America.
