Gary Merenstein

Gary E. Merenstein is a dedicated and principled attorney with a solid background of legal experience. Merenstein received his BA in American Studies from the University of Colorado. His law studies began in 1986 when he was accepted by Stetson College of Law in St. Petersburg, Florida. Upon receiving his law degree, he was then accepted to carry on his legal studies at the University of Florida where his focus was on taxation. Gary Merenstein received his Masters Degree in Tax Law from the University of Florida in 1990 and, before long, began his career as an attorney. Gary E. Merenstein established his own law practice, “Gary Merenstein, Attorney at Law” in October of 1990 in Boulder, Colorado, where he now practices consumer protection, tax law, conservatorships, guardianships, mental health law, and class action litigation. Merenstein has been recognized for his work representing consumers subjected to abusive debt collection practices under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and also defending consumers in debt collection cases. Gary Merenstein has also worked representing consumers in breach of warranty, truth in lending, unfair trade practices, auto repossession, and foreclosure cases. His experience, in addition, focuses on tax return preparation and representing consumers in front of the Internal Revenue Service. Gary E. Merenstein’s name is not unknown in the state, as he was one of the main forces behind establishing the least sophisticated consumer legal standard in Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act cases, and was one of the attorneys responsible for the Colorado Supreme Court decision in Flood v. Mercantile Adjustment Bureau. This landmark Colorado case also established the standard that debt collectors must comply with under the Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in regard to the legality of language in their initial validation notices sent to consumers. Gary Merenstein’s accomplishments do not end there, as he also co-counseled approximately 15 consumer protection class actions, and also served as co-counsel in several reported cases. Merenstein is a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, the Boulder County Bar Association, and the Colorado Bar Association. Gary is also a member of The National Legal Aid & Defender Association.
