Dr. Faten Aberra MD

Faten Aberra, MD, MSCE, is an attending physician and faculty member at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Aberra is certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology and maintains memberships in the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), where she was an Elected Member of ACG’s Women's Committee from 2004 to 2010. In addition, Dr. Faten Aberra maintains professional affiliation with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), where she serves as an Elected Member of the CCFA’s National Patient Education Committee. She also holds membership in Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.

Dr. Faten Aberra obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Swarthmore College and acquired her Doctor of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. Upon fulfillment of her internship requirements and the completion of her residency and Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Aberra assumed her teaching responsibilities there. Dr. Faten Aberra has lectured at a variety of symposia and patient outreach programs on a regular basis; she delivers three or more presentations annually on topics such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, colitis, and other related subjects.

Dr. Faten Aberra has been honored repeatedly as a student, educator, practitioner, and researcher. In 1989, for instance, Dr. Aberra won the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Incentive for Excellence in Chemistry prize. In 1990, she further demonstrated her expertise with a Pew Fellowship Award for Research in Biochemistry. Dr. Faten Aberra earned additional recognition from the NSF in 1994, this time with a Research Fellowship in Neuro-Respiratory Physiology. She has garnered a number of other impressive awards since 2002, including the On the Spot Award from the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, the Division of Gastroenterology Raffensberger Fellow Teaching Award, and the Citizenship and Service Award from the Division of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Faten Aberra has either published, been cited in, or co-authored more than 40 research articles and abstracts, both in the United States and abroad. Moreover, she has generated several notable textbook chapters and contributed to specialty treatment manuals related to her discipline. She also sits on the peer review board for medical journals.
