Zach Friend
With a Master’s degree from Georgetown University, Zach Friend has cultivated a successful career in public policy and media relations. During the 2008 presidential primary and general elections, Zach Friend served as the Press Secretary in Barack Obama’s election campaign offices in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Friend created weekly media plans and drafted opinion pieces and letters to the editor on behalf of Obama for America, operating as a spokesperson to a number of news outlets across the state. In this role, Zach Friend utilized the skills and knowledge he gained while working for Senator John Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004. Today, Zach Friend works for the Santa Cruz Police Department as Crime Analyst and Press Information Officer. Since 2005, Friend has spent his time with the department directing media relations and operating as an on-the-record spokesperson for news outlets on behalf of the agency. He also works to maintain relationships between the Santa Cruz Police Department and print, radio, television, and social media organizations. In addition to his responsibilities as Press Information Officer, Zach Friend has financial and analytical duties with the department. He oversees a $23 million annual budget, including numerous multi-million dollar grant applications, in order to allocate financial resources and create revenue projections. Friend analyzes and develops models of crime statistics, which have helped him design and implement an online crime reporting system. In addition to his Master of Public Policy, Zach Friend holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Legal Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he graduated with honors and was a member of the National Merit Society. Zach Friend also possesses a financial planning certificate from Columbia University.
