Reggae Shack Cafe
Founded by Omar and Arpita Oselimo in 2003, the Reggae Shack Café rapidly established itself as one of the most popular Jamaican restaurants in the Gainesville, Florida, area. The Reggae Shack Café presents patrons with a menu of delicious dishes that reflect traditional Jamaican cooking styles, as well as new dishes evolved from that tradition. The Oselimos’ penchant for fresh ingredients and rich flavor contributes to the allure and excitement of the Reggae Shack Café menu.
Catering to a variety of dietary preferences, the Reggae Shack Café serves seafood, meat, vegetarian, and vegan dishes. Its signature entrees include curry palm hearts, vegan steak, oxtail, and jerk chicken. All entrees come with steamed cabbage, plantains, rice, and peas. Rum cake and vegan carrot cake, as well as Dulce de Leche Festivals, rank among the favorite desserts of Reggae Shack Café patrons.
The Reggae Shack Café has steadily risen in popularity year after year. In 2005, The Gainesville Sun named the café as one of the best places in the city to eat, and in 2007, the Reggae Shack Café won the Rib Fest competition. As exemplified by its logo of a shack under a coconut tree dancing to reggae music, the restaurant strives to create a lively, entertaining dining experience for all of its patrons.
Located just six blocks from the University of Florida at 619 West University Avenue, the Reggae Shack Café features several televisions, making it an ideal gathering spot to watch Gator football, share some Red Stripe beer, and snack on Caribbean hot wings, spicy curry wings, or jerk wings. The Reggae Shack Café offers plenty of sandwich and unique drink options, as well.
In addition to sharing its enthusiasm for University of Florida sports, the Reggae Shack Café supports its community through involvement in the Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County and sponsorship of student organizations. The restaurant also aids people in need by donating leftover food to Sister Hazel Angel of Mercy Ministries, which helps people with disadvantages.
