I am particularly honored to serve my alma mater through the Drexel University Advisory Board. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Drexel University in 1979. Financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel founded Drexel University in 1891 as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The university today maintains its strong commitment to intensive, career-oriented training. The cooperative education program has stood as a cornerstone of Drexel University education since 1919. The co-op program allows students to alternate full-time professional employment with studies in their academic specialty. The co-op presents one of the most diverse and comprehensive career training programs in the U.S., offering students working opportunities within approximately 1,500 businesses and organizations throughout 12 countries worldwide. Participating firms include large Fortune 500 entities in the technology, financial, law, and pharmaceutical industries. Drexel University has operated on the forefront of the U.S. technology industry for decades. In 1983, it became the first American university requiring students to have personal access to a microcomputer for coursework. Drexel University expanded beyond its traditional strengths of science and engineering in 1997, with the establishment of the School of Education and the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems. Drexel University remains a top-tier private school, earning placement in the 2010 Times Higher Education World University Rankings of top academic institutions. Consistently placing near the top of the U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges list. Drexel University currently ranks second among the magazine's Up and Coming National Universities. I am particularly drawn to Drexel University's commitment to innovation. In February 2011, the university opened the Center for Mobilities Research and Policy, the first of its kind in the U.S. This center dedicates its resources to the study of movement as a social science, whether through vehicle transportation, mobile devices, or global transmigration.
