Nancy Silberkleit

Co-Chief Executive Officer of iconic Archie Comic Publications, Inc., Nancy Silberkleit directs the Education and Broadway Entertainment Divisions of the nearly $40-million-a-year corporation. A veteran educator, Nancy Silberkleit joined the comic book publisher in 2009, filling a management role following the August 2008 death of her husband of 20 years, Publisher Michael Silberkleit.

Nancy Silberkleit left her job in art education to accept the challenge of coleading the global corporation, headquartered in Mamaroneck, New York. She worked as an elementary school teacher since 1987 within the New Jersey public school system. Her role as an art teacher included presenting students with art concepts and skills development across an array of media. Even though she had no training in business management and had not gotten involved with Archie Comic Publications before her husband passed away, Nancy Silberkleit accepted an invitation to help guide the company after careful consideration and after seeing the opportunity to help improve reading education, to benefit school districts, and to boost falling company revenues.

Within two years, Nancy Silberkleit incorporated her commitment to literacy into the comic book industry. She launched ComicBookFairs.com, an education division of Archie Comics, to encourage students to read, while providing a new source of fundraising for participating schools. Nancy Silberkleit coined the phrase "Comic Books + Children = Reading," inspired by her belief that children will read if they can read something they enjoy. The Archie Comics, begun in the early 1940s, feature fictional characters Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and their friends, and children enjoy reading their stories because the characters face the same life issues as the average American teenager.

Nancy Silberkleit’s commitment to addressing matters of social relevance, such as bullying and alcohol use among teens, and her advocacy for arts education for children have been recognized by Fortune magazine. In her efforts, Nancy Silberkleit has gained support from New York Governor David Paterson and has bonded with the CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
