Maryland Hydroponics

At Maryland Hydroponics, experienced and novice plant growers can find everything they need to grow plants hydroponically, which involves using mineral solutions in water instead of soil to grow plants. The benefits of this type of growing include stable and high yields, reusable water and lower costs, and the environmentally sound practice of not releasing nutrition pollution. At Maryland Hydroponics, growers can take advantage of the staff’s expertise on gardening and purchase videos and books on the subject. In addition, they can buy whole hydroponic systems as well as individual items such as grow light bulbs, lighting accessories, nutrients, pots and containers, and garden accessories. Maryland Hydroponics also offers seed starting products including the Rapid Rooter Tray, Clonex Clone Solution, mini greenhouses, and seedling heat mats. Plant care products range from illuminated microscopes to fly traps to fungicides, and nutrients include well-known names such as Big Bloom, Open Sesame, and Happy Frog.

Grossing more than $1 million in its first year, Maryland Hydroponics moved out of a 700-square-foot facility into a 4,900-square-foot area to accommodate its rapid growth, and the new site features a wealth of beautiful hanging plants, flowers, and trees. Much of Maryland Hydroponics’ success can be attributed to owner Brian Rubin, who lives with Asperger’s syndrome. He learned the practical side of running a business through the Department of Rehabilitation Services’ Reach Independence Through Self Employment (RISE) program. He has also actively participated in the Syracuse University Whitman School of Management’s Start-Up NY program as a contributor in the Extraordinary Speaker Series, in order to help motivate others with disabilities.

Maryland Hydroponics has been honored by the Governor of Maryland and the Progressive Gardening Trade Association, which presented the company with an award for the best television advertisement. Maryland Hydroponics’ owner was presented with the “Small Business Owner with a Disability” award from Maryland Small Business Week.
