Margie Shabat
Chicago, Illinois, resident Margie Shabat is an outspoken activist and supporter of women’s health issues. When Ms. Shabat was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, she decided to become an advocate for other women struggling with their diagnosis. At a time when many women in the Jewish community chose to remain silent about their cancer, Margie Shabat spoke out and offered them hope and comfort.
Her passion for aiding survivors has led Ms. Shabat to reach out to other women in her community. She is a supporter of the Susan B. Komen for the Cure, a nationwide breast cancer organization that focuses on research, education, and advocacy for women with the disease. In addition to her financial support, Ms. Shabat regularly speaks at breast cancer fundraising events in the greater Chicago area. Diagnosed by chance at a Nordstrom department store while getting a facial, she knows how such unexpected news can change an individual’s life. Margie Shabat now advocates for yearly mammograms for early detection.
After four years of remission, Margie Shabat’s cancer returned in 2001. In addition to medical treatment, Ms. Shabat relied on her faith to cope with the anxiety and doubt that inevitably comes with any recurrence of cancer. In particular, she found consolation in the Biblical Psalms. She Shabat credits her faith with allowing her to experience a refuah shalayma, or full recovery.
Through illness and struggle, Margie Shabat learned a great deal and seeks to pass that knowledge on to others through her new blog, MOMChicago (momchicago.wordpress.com). Furthermore, Ms. Shabat’s lifelong health struggles have given her empathy and understanding of the plight of men and women who experience chronic pain. On her blog, she regularly provides readers with encouraging words and messages. Her focus on the Jewish calendar and daily Torah passages are intended to inspire and raise the spirits of her fellow Jewish readers.
