Marc Shmuger
A veteran entertainment executive, Marc Shmuger has held a series of roles with some of the film industry’s leading studios, including Sony Pictures Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Marc Shmuger’s talent in film was first evident as a student at Wesleyan University, where he earned a Student Academy Award nomination for Best Student Film. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Film Studies in 1980, Marc Shmuger began a successful career spanning more than three decades.
For many years, Marc Shmuger’s professional focus was in the area of film marketing; he initially played a significant part in the promotion of a number of successful movies during the 1980s, including Sophie’s Choice and Gandhi. His achievements gained him recognition among industry executives, and in 1991, Marc Shmuger accepted the post of Senior Vice President of Creative Advertising with Columbia Pictures. For nearly seven years, Marc Shmuger oversaw marketing campaigns for every movie released by Columbia and its sister company Tri Star, including such memorable films as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Men In Black, Air Force One, and In The Line of Fire.
In 1998, Marc Shmuger moved to Universal Pictures, where he held several high-level executive roles, including President of Marketing, Vice Chairman, and Chairman. Under Marc Shmuger’s oversight, Universal Pictures set industry records for most consecutive number one openings, most $100 million summer releases, and 4 consecutive films opening at more than $40 million. Marc Shmuger also oversaw the restructuring of Universal’s twenty-year joint-venture partnership in UIP, and he built and successfully launched Universal Pictures International, the studio’s first stand-alone international marketing and distribution company
