Janet Schlarbaum is best known in her hometown of White Bird, ID as being “the lady who loves kittens,” but those who know her know there is much more to Janet Schlarbaum. A mother of four, grandmother of nine and great grandmother of one, Janet Schlarbaum has always put the needs of others ahead of her own. After graduating from high school in 1959, Janet Schlarbaum enrolled in a beauty academy in Boise, and received her cosmetologist’s license in 1960. In 1961, she married her high school sweetheart Burt Schlarbaum, and the two moved to White Bird to raise a family and open a beauty salon called A Touch of Class. After only two years of marriage, Janet Schlarbaum became pregnant just as her Army Private husband was sent overseas to fight in the Vietnam War. Janet Schlarbaum took it all in stride, keeping herself busy with work and helping friends and neighbors with mending and babysitting. Though her husband missed the birth of their first child, Burt Schlarbaum retired from the military soon afterwards and opened his own auto mechanic’s shop. Ask any of the regulars at A Touch of Class, and they would tell you that Janet Schlarbaum is a bold woman possessing a strong will and a big heart. Always there for a friend or family member in need, Janet closed up shop at A Touch of Class in 2004 to provide daycare to her new great-grandson, Cason. Today, Janet Schlarbaum is just as busy as she was before she retired. In addition to caring for Cason (now four years old), Janet is very active in her local Red Hat Society. She also enjoys crafts, playing bridge, reading, hiking, power walking, and styling hair for elderly neighbors. Always one to lend a hand when needed, Janet Schlarbaum often volunteers at the local battered women’s shelter and food shelf.
