Ernest Barbella
Ernest Barbella received a full scholarship to pursue his graduate studies in food marketing at Cornell University in New York. Under the supervision of Professor Wendell Earl, Ernest Barbella’s studies focused on agricultural economics and food marketing. He graduated from Cornell in 1964. A resident of New York, Ernest Barbella completed his undergraduate studies at The City University of New York (CUNY). While at CUNY, Ernest Barbella acted as the president of the Foreign Trade Association. Ernest Barbella has operated three successful businesses: a food packaging company that manufactures skillet dinners, pasta salads, and macaroni and cheese and employs fifty people; a spice company that sells 250 types of spices; and a Long Island-based chain of five grocery stores, which he sold in 1995. His packaging and spice companies distribute their products internationally. Before managing his own businesses, Ernest Barbella served as an executive in the food industry for several decades. After working for Daitch Shopwell Supermarkets, Ernst Barbella joined the Wakefern Food Corporation as a Meat Buyer and rose through the ranks to the position of Vice President of the Meat Division, a role he filled while also serving as the Administrative Director of the Frozen Food Division. Wakefern Food provides wholesale groceries to its cooperative members, including the ShopRite and PriceRite supermarkets. Ernest Barbella managed a division with $300 million in sales while working for Wakefern. Ernest Barbella worked as Vice President for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. between 1975 and 1979. His responsibilities included merchandising, procurement, and warehousing. He has also served as an Executive Vice President for the Long Island-based Hills Supermarkets, overseeing all aspects of store operations. Ernest Barbella lives on Long Island in historic Syosset, New York, and worships at Saint Edward the Confessor Church.
