Carole Hankin
Since 1990, Dr. Carole Hankin has served as Superintendent of the award-winning Syosset Central School District in New York. The U.S. Department of Education has named all secondary schools in the district Blue Ribbon Schools, and Moody’s Investors Service, Inc. gives it a bond credit rating of Aa1. In the Syosset Central School District, Dr. Carole Hankin oversees 1,500 employees, 10 schools with 6,600 students, and a budget of $188 million. During her tenure as Superintendent, Dr. Carole Hankin has initiated partnerships with a number of area institutions, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Philharmonic, the American Museum of Natural History, and biomedical research center The Rockefeller University. Dr. Hankin also established the Superintendent’s Student Cabinet, which provides a biannual forum for student representatives and the Superintendent. In addition, Dr. Carole Hankin spearheaded a foreign language program in elementary schools that teaches Russian to kindergarteners and Chinese to first graders. Second through fourth graders learn French, Spanish, and Italian, and fifth graders study Latin. Dr. Carole Hankin has received numerous awards for her vision and accomplishments as Superintendent. Such recognition includes the Distinguished Administrator Award from the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers, Inc. in 2009 and Educator of the Year honors in 2008 from professional education association Phi Delta Kappa at Columbia University. Under the leadership of Dr. Carole Hankin, the Syosset Central School District became the only New York State school district to garner the 2009 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. Dr. Carole Hankin earned two Master’s degrees and a Doctorate from Columbia University. Subsequently, she earned a Certificate from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations and completed a seminar at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as at Harvard Business School and Yale University. Dr. Carole Hankin belongs to the Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Museum of Mathematics, chartered by New York State and the only such institution in the country.
