Calder Quartet

With an exciting combination of classical music and current genre-spanning collaborations, the award-winning Calder Quartet provides concertgoers and music lovers with a fresh new perspective on what a string quartet can sound like. The Calder Quartet’s innovative approach to music performance earned them an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Adventurous Programming Award in 2009. It has also garnered them many television appearances with late-night stars such as Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman, and Craig Ferguson.

The Calder Quartet’s collaborative nature began early. The group, which features Benjamin Jacobson and Andrew Bulbrook on violin, Jonathan Moerschel on viola, and Eric Byers on cello, has played together for a number of years. They studied together at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music and at The Colburn School Conservatory of Music where they currently serve as the Quartet-in-Residence. The Calder Quartet also studied at The Juilliard School, receiving an Artist Diploma in Chamber Music Studies, and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin.

The Calder Quartet has released two albums. The first is the Calder Quartet’s debut album, which featured works by Joseph-Maurice Ravel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Thomas Adès. In 2010, they released their second album, Transfiguration, which featured music written especially for the Calder Quartet by American Composer Christopher Rouse. Rouse’s collaboration with the Calder Quartet marks the first time in more than 20 years that Christopher Rouse composed music specifically for any performer or group. The Calder Quartet also collaborates with the American minimalist Western classical Composer, Terry Riley.

The Calder Quartet shares their exciting take on string quartet music in venues across the country, including the Carlsbad Music Festival in San Diego and Los Angeles, a festival that the Calder Quartet co-founded with Composer Matt McBane. Other performances include the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven, Connecticut.
